GUN VIOLENCE

The epidemic of gun violence is ever-present in the form of constant mass shootings. Despite the US military having a consistent presence abroad to “keep Americans safe,” every American is exposed to the threat of gun violence domestically. Since we are not safe in our schools or places of worship, it is time to address the contradiction of government unwillingness to support gun control in a country that considers life an inalienable right.

Legislation We Support

  1. The Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 (H.R. 8) which would require federal background checks for all firearms sales and transfers, expand the background check system to private sales, and lengthen the maximum time allowed for a background check to 10 business days.

  2. Renewal of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban, a subsection of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 and ensure its permanence rather than expiration after 10 years.

  3. National adoption of red flag laws, following the model of ERPO (Extreme Risk Protection Orders) which permits police or family members to petition a state court to order the temporary removal of firearms from a person who may present a danger to others or themselves.

Actions We’re Taking

  1. Registering voters to ensure that if politicians don’t follow through on their promises to represent us and our lives, we will vote them out

  2. Boycotting businesses which are funded by the NRA and other pro-gun lobbyist groups

  3. Calling our senators to ask them to push for a vote on common sense gun control that has passed the House, such as H.R. 8.
