Teen Political Activism Organization COALITION Z Connects Students with NYC Politicians & Opportunities via Meet Your Representatives Youth Town Hall

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK – Youth political activist organization Coalition Z hosted a Meet Your Representatives Youth Town Hall on Saturday, March 30, 2019, which created an innovate space where members of Generation Z were be able to connect and interact with those who represent them in city and state government. This was a unique opportunity aimed at the next generation of voters and citizens, who are often left out of the decisions that affect them. The event took place at the LGBT Center in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, with about 50 teenagers in attendance.

Panelists included City Council Member Helen Rosenthal, City Council Member Brad Lander, and State Senator Alessandra Biaggi’s Deputy Chief of Staff Christian Amato. Attendees were also joined by Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney. Additionally, youth activist groups NYC Says Enough, Teens Take Charge, and Teens Resist were in attendance with civic engagement information; the offices of City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, State Senator Brad Hoylman, Council Member Helen Rosenthal, and State Senator Alessandra Biaggi had tables to provide information on services and internship and volunteer opportunities for attendees.

The event began with a few words from each of the student activist groups on their goals, work, and upcoming events. Afterward, Coalition Z co-founders Zoe Davidson and Alex Lehman opened the event and announced Durga Sreenivasan, Josephine O’Brien, and Charlotte Ritz-Jack as the next Executive Directors of Coalition Z.

The Town Hall featured a panel on civic engagement, local government, and youth involvement. This panel included time for students to ask direct questions concerning issues and policies. After the panel, the event featured networking time in which all attendees were able to directly speak with the panelists, the activist groups, and elected officials’ offices.

Launched in New York City on President Trump’s Inauguration Day, Coalition Z is a national, youth-led, peer-to-peer network of chapters taking political action and engaging young people in our democracy. We decide our priorities in consultation with our chapters, ultimately aiming to reflect Generation Z's largely progressive values.
