Turn the #MeToo Movement into Legislation

In the wake of recent allegations of sexual harassment that have now penetrated the walls of Congress, bipartisan legislation was introduced on Wednesday that seeks to prevent such egregious and criminal behavior from occurring in the future and to establish a more effective and efficient system for reporting incidents when they do. The bill, entitled the Member and Employee Training and Oversight On (ME TOO) Congress Act, would create an in-house counsel for victims of sexual harassment and would give both interns and fellows the same protections as paid employees. Counseling and mediation would also become voluntary in the new bill, rather than mandatory as is currently required.

In addition, House Speaker Paul Ryan announced this week that all House members and staff will be required to undergo anti-sexual harassment training. The Senate also approved a bipartisan resolution that requires mandatory harassment training for all senators, officers, employers and interns.

Despite the heightened attention to the rampant and pervasive incidents of sexual harassment and the measures that have been taken to begin to combat these occurrences, there is much more work to be done. In order to show support for the bill, please contact the authors of the legislation Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.). Call scripts are provided below.

For Congresswoman Speier:

My name is _________ and my zip code is ________.

I want to thank and applaud the bravery of Congresswoman Jackie Speier for sharing her “Me too” experience, and exposing the sexual assault and intimidation that occurs in congress.  In order to make a change and end this cycle of abuse, the first step is to acknowledge the problem. I am proud of Congresswoman Speier for leading the way in DC, and setting the example for change across the country.

I hereby support the Member and Employee Training and Oversight On (ME TOO) Congress Act.

For Senator Gillibrand:

My name is _________ and my zip code is ________.

I want to thank and applaud the bravery of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand for speaking out against the alleged conduct of Harvey Weinstein, for supporting the Campus Accountability and Safety Act which seeks to stop sexual assault on college campuses, and for co-authoring the Member and Employee Training and Oversight On (ME TOO) Congress Act. In order to make a change and end the cycle of abuse, the first step is to acknowledge the problem. I am proud of Senator Gillibrand for leading the way in DC, and setting the example for change across the country.

I hereby support the Member and Employee Training and Oversight On (ME TOO) Congress Act.

Save the Special Counsel

Special Counsel Robert Mueller has led a swift, effective, and impartial investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, already ensnaring Trump aides including campaign chair Paul Manafort and National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.

However, Trump supporters -- from the Wall Street Journal editorial board to surrogate Roger Stone -- have called for Mueller to resign. Republicans in Congress are already seeking to wind down their own collusion investigations, shifting the focus to examining Hillary Clinton’s campaign instead. If we don’t act, Trump and his allies may seek to fire Mueller and block investigation into Russian interference!Fortunately, Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) have proposed a bipartisan bill that would limit Trump’s ability to fire Mueller, protecting the Russia probe. Call your senators and ask them to support this bipartisan bill, using a script and tool from 5 Calls:

Russia’s electoral interference poses a grave threat to our democratic process. If Trump successfully blocks Mueller’s investigation, we’ll lose our best chance to understand what happened and how to prevent it.

Protect Net Neutrality

We hope you and your families had a good Thanksgiving. Over the break, we had the time to reflect about what we’re thankful for, and perhaps in particular, some of the things we take for granted. One of those things is a free and open internet.

Last Tuesday, November 21st, the head of the Federal Communications Commission announced that it plans to get rid of net neutrality rules. These rules make it illegal for an internet service provider to block or slow access to internet content. In other words, net neutrality rules prevent big companies like Verizon, for example, from limiting our access to sites they may ideologically disagree with. Repealing these rules could be potentially devastating for activists, small businesses, and others who don’t have the resources to play into the pockets of Internet Service Providers.

If you believe that we need a free and open internet, this is what you can do this help block a repeal of net neutrality:

  1. Call your Reps: use Battle for the Net’s contact congress tool to tell your representatives to tell the FCC not to vote to repeal net neutrality: . The FCC is a five person committee that sets rules for major communications companies. They’re planning on meeting in December to vote on a repeal. You’re asking your representatives to publically denounce repealing net neutrality, therefore putting pressure on committee members to vote to save the rules.

  2. Protest: Visit a Verizon Store protest on December 7th. You can find a store with an organized protest here:

Support Ralph Northam

Today marks the first major statewide elections since President Trump was inaugurated. Republicans are looking to the results for clues about how to run in 2018. Specifically, Virginia’s race for governor is being seen as a bellwether for the viability of a Republican message that incorporates the traditional Republican principle of lower taxes with the Trump platitude of being tough on crime and immigration. The Republican gubernatorial candidate in Virginia - former Republican National Committee Chairman and 2014 U.S. Senate candidate - Ed Gillespie, has adopted this approach. He is facing off against the Democratic Lieutenant Governor, Ralph Northam. Although it is unclear whether the result will be predictive, it is likely to have an effect on the 2018 midterms.

Most recent polls show a fairly close race, with Northam slightly favored to win. However, in a non-presidential election voting year, turnout is typically low and hard to predict. Therefore, all efforts are needed to encourage voter participation. It is not necessary to live in Virginia to help. With the mission of electing officials who will promote a progressive platform, has made it easy to set up a virtual phone back. For full details and to play your part go to:

Save the Wildlife Refuge

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is one of America’s last pristine wild areas, home to polar bears, wolves, caribou, and other threatened wildlife. Now, the Trump administration is trying to reverse decades of conservation and open the refuge to oil drilling!

Trump and the Republican Congress are hoping that drilling in this fragile environment will help pay for their new tax plan, which gives tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans. Take action to save the refuge, using a call script and find-your-senator tool from 5 Calls:

You can explain to Congress that proposed oil development would occur on the 1.5-million-acre coastal plain sandwiched between the Arctic Ocean and the Brooks mountain range, and would have serious impacts on species such as polar bear, caribou, musk oxen and hundreds of species of migratory birds. This area is considered the “biological heart” of the refuge, and habitat loss that occurs here will impact the entire Arctic Refuge and beyond.

Oil related activities such as seismic testing, aircraft and vehicle noise, or even the mere presence of humans nearby, can drive mother polar bears away from their den and cubs. Drilling the Arctic Refuge could alter the annual path of the Porcupine caribou herd, one of the longest land mammal migrations in the world.

We can’t let the Trump administration take this wildlife and magnificent landscape away from future generations, just to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy. Take action:

Free Melecio Andazola Morales

On October 12, Melecio Andazola Morales, an undocumented American living in Denver, went to a government interview with his daughter as part of the process of getting his green card. The meeting turned out to be a trap. After intentionally separating him from his daughter, a US citizen, authorities took Mr. Andazola Morales into custody pending deportation hearings. To detain a dedicated community member and father of four with no criminal record in such a deceitful way may seem beyond comprehension, but this the state of immigration enforcement under Trump.

Mr. Andazola Morales’s daughter, Viviana, is a senior at Yale. She and friends have started the #FreeMelecio movement to demand his immediate release. You can help by:

  1. CALLING Jeffrey Lynch (Field Director at DHS ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations). Get the instructions here:

  2. EMAILING Jeffrey Lynch using pages 3 and 4 of the above script.

  3. DONATING to a GoFundMe page currently raising money to pay for legal representation for Mr. Andazola Morales

  4. SIGNING a petition demanding his release

In addition to helping Mr. Andazola Morales, you can also call Congress to demand that they pass the DREAM act, to protect Americans covered by DACA:

Stop ACA Sabotage

After failing to repeal the Affordable Care Act, the Trump administration is going all out to sabotage it. The Department of Health and Human Services has halted enrollment outreach, slashed advertising funding by 90%, and even shutdown on Sunday mornings –– a peak traffic time for Americans trying to buy health coverage.

Here’s how you can help save the Affordable Care Act:

1. Share the link with friends and family who might need to purchase health insurance! Spread the word on social media. Make sure to explain that this year’s open enrollment period is now November 1 - December 15!

2. Call your members of Congress to support the Alexander-Murray ACA Stabilization Bill. This bipartisan bill would reinstate subsidies axed by the Trump administration, as well as increase outreach and advertising funding:

Get the Iran Deal Re-Certified

On Friday, October 13th, President Trump “decertified” the nuclear deal with Iran under U.S. law. Dismissing recent statements of U.S. allies, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and even members of his own cabinet - all of whom have maintained that Iran has upheld its contractual obligations - President Trump emphatically accused Iran of “not living up to the spirit of the deal.” As an immediate consequence of decertification, the Republican-controlled Congress will now have 60 days to vote as to whether or not to reimpose sanctions on Iran that were suspended in 2015 as part of the agreement.

Even Republicans who were skeptical of the initial deal are now urging Congress to support it. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman, Republican Ed Royce said that despite his belief that the deal is “flawed,” the U.S. “must now enforce the hell out of it.” And in an emphatic response denouncing President Trump’s decision, John Kerry, former Secretary of State who was a signatory to the original agreement, released a statement on Friday calling on Congress to preserve the essence of the deal. He warned that Trump’s decertification “would unravel the agreement once and for all, leaving our allies to blame the United States, squandering our leadership and our leverage.”

In an effort to prevent Congress from reimposing sanctions - thereby starting the U.S. down the slippery slope of dissolution of the deal and, as John Kerry warns, leaving “America isolated, America alone, and the Middle East on the brink,” - Call your representatives in Congress and urge them to vote “no” to reimposing sanctions on Iran!

You can use the following script:

Hello, my name is [NAME] and I am one of your constituents calling from [ADDRESS INCLUDING ZIP CODE]. I'm calling to urge [NAME] to oppose reinstituting the sanctions on Iran that were suspended in 2015 as part of the JCPOA. Even members of the President’s cabinet such as National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson agree that staying in the deal serves U.S. national security interests. It is critical that as long as Iran is in compliance with the deal, the U.S. show the world and its allies that it can keep its word and its shared commitments.

Advocate for Strong Gun Laws

Last Sunday, 58 Americans were murdered in Las Vegas by a man who possessed at least 23 guns, 12 of which were equipped with a “bump stock.” These bump stocks –– legal attachments that allow semi-automatic guns to fire like illegal fully-automatic guns –– are one of the reasons the death toll for this tragic shooting was so high. Now, Democrats, Republicans, and even the NRA have been calling to tighten the regulations on bump stocks. Here’s what you can do to help ensure that comprehensive legislation is passed:

  1. Call your senators and tell them to co-sponsor Senator Dianne Feinstein’s “Automatic Gun Fire Prevention Act.” Even if your senators have already agreed to co-sponsor, it is important to show them that they have your support. They can even reference the volume of calls they have received about the legislation. Here is a sample call script:

Hello, my name is ___ and I am calling today urge Senator ___ to support and co-sponsor Senator Feinstein’s “Automatic Gun Fire Prevention Act.” Many of the lives lost in the tragic Las Vegas shooting could have been prevented if the shooter did not have a bump stock weapon accessory. Supporting this bill will help prevent a similar tragedy from happening again. Thank you.

Suspend the Jones Act

Hurricanes Irma and Maria have devastated Puerto Rico, but President Trump is preventing desperately-needed supplies from reaching the island by enforcing an outdated law!

The Jones Act of 1920 hinders disaster relief efforts by restricting shipping to Puerto Rico, mandating that all goods shipped between US ports must be built, owned, and operated by Americans. The result? Puerto Rico pays more than twice what neighboring islands pay for food, clean water, and electricity from the US mainland –– all because of the Jones Act’s burden on it as a US territory!

In the wake of crippling hurricanes, Puerto Ricans can’t afford to pay the hundreds of millions of dollars that the Jones Act is expected to cost them each year. The entire island has lost electricity, food and water are running out, gas lines are forming, and hospitals have been destroyed. Ask Congress and the Trump administration to help reduce Puerto Rico’s suffering!

Fight to Protect DREAMers

Almost 800,000 American residents are DACA-eligible –– they’ve grown up in the US, but lack proper papers so are at risk of deportation without President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. These DREAMers are living in fear after Trump signed an executive order removing their protection earlier this month. Although Democrats have reached a tentative agreement with the president to continue their protection, there’s no telling when Trump might change his mind. Here is what you can do to permanently protect the legal status of DREAMers:

1. Call Senator Chuck Schumer - (202) 224-6542 - and thank him for co-sponsoring the DREAM Act of 2017 which is a bipartisan bill seeking to grant permanent lawful status to undocumented Americans who immigrated as children. Although there’s nothing we’re asking the Senator to do, he can reference constituent support for the bill when speaking in favor of it. Leave a voicemail if you can’t get through. Below is a brief sample script:

You: Hi my name is ___ and I’m calling from Manhattan to thank Senator Schumer for co-sponsoring the Dream Act of 2017. I’m proud to have representatives who will speak up for the more than one hundred thousand New Yorkers who are DACA-eligible. I encourage the Senator to everything in his power to move this legislation through the Senate. Thanks!

2. Call Senator Kirsten Gillibrand - (202) 224-4451 - and ask her to co-sponsor the DREAM Act of 2017. Leave a voicemail if you can’t get through.

You: Hi my name is ___ and I’m calling from Manhattan to ask Senator Gillibrand to co-sponsor the Dream Act of 2017 (Senate Bill 1615). I believe the Senator has an obligation to protect the  more than one hundred thousand New Yorkers who are DACA-eligible. It’s not enough to simply denounce the president’s termination of the Obama-era policy - we need Senator Gillibrand to co-sponsor the bill and do everything in her power to move this legislation through the Senate. Thank you and have a nice day.

3. Text "Resist" to 50409. The “Resistbot” will ask for your name and zip code and then let you compose a message to your members of Congress. Just type in a message similar to the ones above and press send. Your message will be faxed to the Senators’ offices.

Pledge for Our Future

Trump has just announced the disastrous: the US will withdraw from the crucial Paris Climate Agreement.

Under Trump, the federal government has gutted the pollution-cutting measures necessary for the US meet its commitments under the Paris accord. If the US does not uphold its side of the deal, the agreement could unravel.

To push back, Coalition Z is officially launching the Pledge for Our Future, asking state and local leaders to step up and help the US meet its climate commitments –– despite the withdrawal at the federal level.

With the pledge as a starting point, we will build momentum for concrete climate legislation at the local level and send a signal to the international community that the US will meet its commitments, even if Trump won’t.

We’ve put together a quick toolkit to help you contact your local officials and ask them to sign the pledge. Click here to get started:

Here’s the text of the pledge:

“I pledge to help the United States fulfill and exceed its commitments under the Paris Climate Change Agreement. I understand that it is essential for subnational actors to ensure that the US collectively meets and exceeds its commitments under the Paris Agreement, even if the federal government abandons emissions reduction policies. I will support and/or introduce policies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and bolster clean energy. I also pledge to push the subnational government of which I am a member to sign the Under2 MOU and join the Under2 Coalition, if it has not already done so.”

We have already secured our first signatories from the New York state legislature and New York City Council. Now, let’s take this pledge national.

Stop the AHCA!

This Thursday, House Republicans voted to repeal and replace Obamacare, only a month after their embarrassing attempt in March. If the AHCA (Paul Ryan's replacement bill) passes the Senate, it will remove protections for citizens with preexisting conditions, cut billions from Medicaid, and defund Planned Parenthood. Up to 44,000 Americans may die yearly if coverage becomes less accessible.

Here are four easy ways you can express your opposition to the AHCA!

1. Call your representative in the House! Are they a Democrat? Then thank them for their vote and make them promise not to change their stance if the AHCA is returned from the Senate for a final vote! Here are three sample scripts, each for different party affiliations.…/gop-health-care-repeal-…/

2. Call your Senators. Below is a sample script adapted from Bustle:

"Hello, my name is _______. I am a constituent of Sen. _________, and I am calling to ask them to vote against repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act with the American Health Care Act. I want to relay a clear message to them that it's critical that the provisions and benefits of the ACA remain in place. Since its passage, 20 million Americans have gained health care coverage, and our country is enjoying a record low uninsured rate. [If they’re a Democrat] I understand that the Senator has expressed their opposition to the AHCA, but I want to remind him/her that Americans like myself need him/her to do everything his/her power to block the bill, beyond just voting in opposition. Thank you for your time!"

3. Call Republican Senators using a similar script as above. These seven Senators have expressed doubts about voting to repeal and replace Obamacare. All we need is three of them to vote no!

a) Lisa Murkowski (R - AK) - (202) 224-6665
b) Susan Collins (R - MN) - (202)224-2523
c) Rob Portman (R - OH) - (202)-224-3353
d) Dean Heller (R - NV) - (202)-224-6244
e) Cory Gardner (R - CO) - (202) 224-5941
f) Mike Lee (R - UT) - (202)-224-5444
g) Shelley Moore Capito (R -WV) - (202)-224-6472

"Hello, my name is _______. I’m calling to ask Senator ______ to vote against repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act with the American Health Care Act. I want to relay a clear message to them that it's critical that the provisions and benefits of the ACA remain in place. Since its passage, 20 million Americans have gained health care coverage, and our country is enjoying a record low uninsured rate. [Residents of their state e.g. “Coloradans”] _____ benefit from the ACA and your vote in opposition to its repeal is essential. Thank you for your time."

4. Post on social media about how the repeal could affect you and your family. Not covered by Obamacare currently? You can still call attention to the effects the bill could have on those like you, using the hashtag “#IAmAPreexistingCondition.” Here is a list of some of the preexisting conditions that may not be protected under the ACHA:…/heal…/preexisting-conditions-list-trnd/

Protect International Aid

As President Trump's budget proposal is considered in Congress, many vital services are at risk of losing federal funding. One of the top targets: international aid, which saves lives around the world and makes us safer by improving America’s international relations.

Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Chris Coons (D-DE) are circulating a bipartisan “Dear Colleague” letter that supports: Maternal and Child Health, Gavi (the global vaccine alliance), and Nutrition. For this week's action, we ask that you please urge your senators to sign on to this letter in support of the "low-cost, high-impact" programs that are so imperative to children and families worldwide.

We have provided a sample email below, adapted from Save the Children:

My name is [INSERT YOUR NAME] and as your constituent, I am asking that you please sign on to a bipartisan Dear Colleague letter being circulated by Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Chris Coons (D-DE) in support of Maternal and Child Health, Gavi (the global vaccine alliance) and Nutrition.

Largely due to United States leadership, since 1990, the deaths of children age 5 and under have been cut in half. Yet, 16,000 children still die each day from preventable causes. I urge you to endorse efforts to maintain the leadership of the United States in preventing deaths of children around the world. Please sign on to the Dear Colleague letter to demonstrate your commitment to funding life-saving programs.

I look forward to your response.”

Stand with Planned Parenthood

On March 8th, all across the world, we celebrated International Women's Day. Building on this momentum and in the wake of the GOP's introduction of the Obamacare repeal bill - which seeks to defund Planned Parenthood by preventing Medicaid reimbursements - it is more important than ever that we continue to fight to protect women's reproductive rights. The new healthcare plan cuts off 2.5 million women from receiving the care they need and deserve, and is particularly damaging to women in low-income, minority communities. Below, you will find many easy steps you can take to let Congress know that you, along with the majority of Americans, believe that the services PP provides are both extensive and essential.

1. Call Speaker Ryan

Using the number 608-433-0522, call Speaker of the House Paul Ryan to make your voice heard. You can use the script below, taken from Planned Parenthood’s official website.

Hi, my name is ____________ and I live in _____________.

I'm calling to ask Speaker Ryan NOT to hold a vote on any attempt to defund Planned Parenthood.

We see through your blatantly political attempt to do whatever it takes to attack women's health and rights and take health care away from the people who need it most. If Congress cuts funding to Planned Parenthood, millions of people will be left without access to birth control, lifesaving cancer screenings, and other basic care. Many of them will have nowhere else to go for the health care they need.

I'm counting on Speaker Ryan to do the right thing and stand up for the Planned Parenthood patients in our community and across the country who rely on those health centers.

I stand with Planned Parenthood because [insert your own story, if you like].

I expect Speaker Ryan to stop any attacks on Planned Parenthood and the vital health services they provide.

Thank you for your time.

Tell Your Senators: Gorsuch Opposes Transgender Rights!

[ACTION ALERT]: Donald Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court, Neil Gorsuch, has a history hostile rulings towards the transgender community. In 2009, in an unpublished decision in the case of Kastl v. Maricopa County Community College, Gorsuch cited safety concerns in allowing an employer to fire a transgender woman. Six years later, in Druley v. Patton, Gorsuch joined an opinion that denied a transgender prisoner access to adequate hormone therapy among other necessities.
